Third Day in Rome… day trip!

Ostia Antigua

Day trip to the ruins of Ostia, which is a large ancient Roman city.

Ostia Lido

Afterwards, we went to the beach of Ostia, which is a few stops away on the metro. It was a beautiful day outside, but was rather humid.

Ostia Antigua

We woke up bright and early at 7am, ate some breakfast at the hotel (which was pretty good, actually). Then we headed to the metro and went to Ostia Antigua station, which is not far from the Ostia ruins. The Ostia ruins were free today because it was the end of culture week, but we had to pay for a map. They were pretty amazing ruins- it was gigantic. I’m still a bit sore from walking all of that earlier today. The public baths are huge- Romans sure like their baths. The tiles are Roman-like, but people throughout time have tried to restore them and haven’t been quite successful. We went down a tunnel, which was rather spooky and exciting. We ate lunch at Ostia’s restaurant/café. I bought a miniature statue of Romulus and Remus (AP Art History people- the same one made by the Etruscans in that blackish stone), which I thought was pretty cool and Evan liked a lot.

Evan and I then went to the beach that is two stops down the metro. It was really pretty and perfect weather, but I was feeling grumpy about standing on a train with people packed in like sardines. It was rather unbearably hot for me, and I was tired. We grabbed a gelato on the way back to the miserable train and went back to Rome to eat dinner and sleep. =)
